RetroCULT Christmas Gift Idea: G.I. Joe

The season is almost upon us, quite frankly it can be one of the most stressful times of the year but do not fear, Retro CULT is here. We will be offering regular features over the Christmas period to give you the perfect gift ideas that will help you decrease your stress levels. Not only this but we will be giving away a copy of the Christmas gift that we feature.

Our first Christmas gift idea is the double feature, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra/G.I. Joe Retaliation (available on both Blu-Ray and DVD.) Both films are action packed, which not only posses great special effects but an interesting story line to boot. Granted the story line will not need any critical thinkers but when has an action film of this nature ever needed you to over think the plot?

The films are often compared with Transformers due to them both being created by Hasbro. I personally believe  G.I. Joe succeeds where Transformers failed they provided unbelievable action sequences with great one liners, and an interesting story line. Flashbacks are always a hard tool to get right in movies, it is done to perfection in the first film. The flashback acts like a prequel to the series, also allows us to create attachment to the main cast. The second film surpasses the first film with spell bounding effects, they also managed to secure the massive names of Bruce Willis, and Dwayne “The Rock.” Johnson, who seems to be involved in every blockbuster of the last two years. The second film is bigger, badder, and undeniably better then the first.

Both films have an ensemble cast which will have everyone drooling from daughters to grandmothers with names like Channing Tatum, The Rock, Dennis Quaid, and Bruce Willis. There is enough star power through both films to draw in every member of the family, keep your eyes peeled in the first film for a cameo from Brendan Fraser. The movies do not fit the current mold of dark realist remakes for Superman, Spiderman, and Batman, The films still keep a certain cartoon effect, which for me is not a bad thing not everything has to be explained or made realistic, some times it is just great to enjoy a movie without the need for it to be super realistic. The films are great for any action aficionado and would be perfect for a family night in, sparing a few swear words here and there.
